My only experience with Morocco up until last week was a trip to Agadir with dad 10 years ago and all I could remember was getting a henna tattoo and scaring him into thinking it was real.
Goes to show how much father knows about tattoos.
It also goes to show how much I knew Morocco.
I was then very excited when J and I decided to visit Marrakech for a long weekend.
Here's the trip in about a dozen pictures.
Most of which are food-related.
There's a surprise.
Our first drink of mint tea was in the sunny terrace of Riad Al Kadar where we stayed for the duration.
If you go to Marrakech make sure you stay there - We loved it and the owner, Michele, is great.
We had Moroccan pastries and relished the ones filled with dates more than anything - I'm sure no one will mind that we kept comparing them to Fig Newtons.
We ate olives. Many many many olives. I love olives. I won't be eating any any time soon.
We bought fresh chicken.
And we turned it into this at one of the House of Fusion cooking classes.
We learnt how to prepare couscous properly.
I discovered Moroccan olive oil and fell in love with it.
We drank pints of mojito.
We learnt to make Berber omelette. I like Berber omelette.
I ate carrots. I still don't like carrots.
We hung out some more at our Riad.
I drank liters of fresh orange juice.
I also drank liters of Fanta Orange, because it was the right colour. I don't trust Fanta orange that isn't orange.
We spent a silly amount of money on spices and J sulked about how much they cost.
But we nevertheless had a lot of fun being shown around the spice souk by Edwina and Susie from House of Fusion.
Well, I did - I can't talk for him.
We had an 8-course meal at our Riad.
But I stopped taking pictures after the first two, because I was more concerned with the actual eating.
We stuffed our faces with flat bread. I like flat bread.
And most importantly, we made it out of the donkey/motorbike/horse-ridden streets unscathed.
Go to Marrakech. stay at Riad Al Kadar, do a cooking course, drink plenty of Moroccan wine and eat a lot.
That is all.

Good God, that looks fantastic. Were the spices expensive or did you just buy huge quantities?! And are you going the blog the Berber omelette? I'm intrigued...
I definitely will.
In fact, I will be blogging most of the recipes we went through during our class at House of Fusion so expect a series of Moroccan-based recipes in the next few weeks!
As for the spices... Let's just say we were expecting to spend less and we felt they could have been cheaper, but then again we don't really know the prices so difficult to judge!
Those are some scary women in your riad, looks like a lot of fun though!
So glad you had such a great trip and enjoyed the class with Edwina. We made the berber omelette too and I've made it several times since.
I look forward to the recipe posts!
Ain't Marrakech ace? You really captured the fabulous foodie highlights of the place with the OJ, the couscous, the spices and the pastries. The latter were a real eye opener to me as I had had no experience with them when we went.
Sounds like you had a great time, even though you are a lost cause when it comes to carrots ;)
