A gastronomic fairy tale - Coffee ice cream

Do you believe in fairy tales?
I do... I always have...
I still dream of a knight in shining armour coming to my rescue and sweeping me off my feet.
Of course, I am still sitting, waiting and wishing and distracting myself with whatever else nice life has to offer.
Yes, that would be food.
And shoes.

Nevertheless about a month ago I got to feel a little like Cinderella minus the prince - The Fairy Hobmother appeared and granted a wish I had expressed on my friend Kavey's blog.

The Fairy Hobmoter is actually a dude called Ian who works for Appliances Online.
They sell cookers and other white goods, but because I'm not greedy nor high maintenance  I asked for an ice cream maker  (although a nice massive fridge U.S. of A. style would have been nice too - Dear Fairy Hobmother take note for your next run).

I've been wanting one for ages, you see, but felt that if I was to buy yet another kitchen gadget the housemates would have not been impressed.
Considering it was a gift it would have been rude of them to make me send it back.
I'm a genius.

Anyway, I got the ice cream maker and in extreme excitement announced I'd be making ice cream on the first weekend I had it.
I decided that the bowl didn't really have to be left in the freezer for 24 hours prior to use like the nice people who wrote the instructions communicated; surely 5 hours would be more than enough?
Guess what: they weren't enough.

Take 2: freeze bowl for 48 hours (just in cases) and make coffee ice cream.
It worked.

I chose to make coffee ice cream because I love coffee ice cream, but have had to give up the industrial sort since developing my annoying caffeine allergy and having the machine means I can make my own with decaf.
Aha!

The recipe for this one is inspired by a specific coffee ice cream you can buy in the supermarket in Italy called "La Coppa del Nonno" (Granndpa's Cup) which incidentally does remind me of my grandpa Lucho who loved having it whenever he came visit.
There is a whole funny story about grandpa's eating habits when he was in Italy and grandma disapproving, but I will save that for another time, because this is getting long.

And back to the ice-cream, it's more of a "latte" ice cream, so creamy and delicate.
I used to mix it with crushed Oreos when I was in school and I think that's what's going to happen to what's left in my freezer...

Coffee ice cream

Makes 1 litre

250ml cold semi-skimmed milk
200ml cold extra thick double cream
110g caster sugar
8g decaf Nescafe (much as I'd love to say using actual coffee it's better I would be lying... It doesn't dissolve as well)
2 egg yolks (yes, egg)

Whip the egg yolks and sugar together until nice and creamy.

Dissolve the "coffee" in the milk and once it's done add the cream and mix.

Pour the coffee mix in with the eggs and sugar, mix and pour into the ice cream machine.

Press "On" (or whatever fanciness it is called in yours) and let go for about half hour.

It should have a really creamy consistency and once put in the freezer it tends to keep it quite well for up to a couple of weeks.

Oh! Oh! And if you make a wish in the comments section of this post by Sunday 5th June you never know... The Fairy HobMother might grant it too...

What a perfect time of year to have ownership of an ice cream machine (gagh! as I say that it will inevitably rain for the next 90 days and 90 nights). The cofe ice cream sounds scrummy!

Oh Fairy Hobmother you really do make dreams come true.

Can you send me a washing machine so I can spend more time making ice cream?

Ooh, another lucky person has been visited by the fairy hobmother. If I got a visit I'd like one of those grilling machines.

Ohh Fairy tales - my love for food is an everlasting one, no man can ever top that, don't be fooled :)

If I was to make a wish - it would be a dough mixer.

I know how can I not already have one? Being from Germany/Denmark variety of bread is for every day. Living in London for years I have had to go without - or hand mixing by hand, oh joy.

Oh, and love the Zaalouk you posted, making it again again tonight!!

Sounds delish! And once you have had homemade ice cream there is just no going back...plus the flavour options are endless.

Sounds gorgeous. I'm always torn between an ice cream maker and a bread machine for top of my list of "gadgets I don't really need but would love"
